Florida's reportable equine disease map is a fresh, interactive way to look at disease occurrence within the state. 

Florida’s reportable equine disease map provides an interactive forum to visually survey equine diseases reported within the state of Florida. Disease information may be viewed specifically for each county by month or by calendar year.  The map uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to visualize disease data and allows veterinarians, horse owners and industry stakeholders to identify at-risk areas and better protect Florida’s horse population.

Update Schedule: Whenever possible this map is updated with new occurrences as they are brought to the department’s attention, but the map will always be updated on the first business day of each month.

What the Map Shows Us

The interactive, online map includes:

• Florida’s reportable equine diseases:
  • Strangles
  • Rabies
  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)
  • West Nile Virus (WNV)
  • Equine Herpes Virus (neurologic form)
  • Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)
  • Equine Piroplasmosis
• Information for each disease is provided as a map layer showing the number of occurrences by county for each month as well as a running total for the state.
• The data will be maintained for each calendar year starting with 2015, with each subsequent year added to the map.

How We Put the Map to Work

• The data will establish a baseline for future disease quantification within the state.
• The data can serve as an alert for extra precaution during increases of disease.
• The data can help horse owners know when disease is current in their areas of interest and can help the decision-making process in determining a quality vaccination schedule given the disease risk at hand.
