How to Obtain a Permit to Place a Cache in a State Forest

The Florida Forest Service permits geocaching within Florida State Forests, at the discretion of the Center/District Manager. A member of the public who wishes to install a cache in a State Forest must submit a request to the State Forest.

Once the request is reviewed and if it is approved, a State Forest Use Permit will be issued. Each State Forest has the authority to approve, decline or place restrictions on caches. Approval or denial of the request may be made by email.

Requirements for Placing a Cache

The cache owner responsible for the cache must meet the following requirements:

• Must submit a  Request for Geocache Placement Form [ Adobe PDF Document ] to the individual state forest office to place a cache on State Forest property.
• The request to place a cache needs to have been approved and a State Forest Use Permit issued before a cache can be placed.
• The cache owner is responsible for the placement and care of the cache. At a minimum, quarterly visits to the cache are required.
• The following are prohibited from being included in a cache: explosives, fireworks, ammo, knives (including pocket knives and multi-tools), drugs, alcohol or other illicit materials.
• The cache can be no bigger than one cubic foot and must be placed above ground (no digging).

Please note: A cache may be removed by Florida Forest Service staff without notice.

Guidelines We Use When Considering a Geocache Placement Request

The following are guidelines that the Florida Forest Service uses when considering a geocache placement request for approval:

• A cache should be placed in close proximity to an existing trail.
• The party responsible for the cache should live in the vicinity of the cache to facilitate quarterly maintenance.
• The proximity and number of preexisting caches in the State Forest are factors.
• Site considerations: archaeological and ecological resources, frequent flooding, fire frequency, upcoming timber harvests, etc.

Geocaching Safety Tips

Please make safety a habit when geocaching in Florida’s State Forests.

• Bring plenty of water and snacks.
• Wear a hat, sunglasses or other weather-protective clothing.
• Get a map and know your route, along with possible alternatives.
• Drive only on open access roads and respect the speed limits.
• Bring sunscreen, insect repellent and a basic first-aid kit.
• Respect other forest users.

Remember: Not all caches may be a quick park and grab.
