The Florida Forest Service is the lead state government agency for forestry and fire. As the largest division of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services with nearly 1,200 employees, the Florida Forest Service is an agency comprised of men and women who serve. This cross-functional and comprehensive workforce protects Floridians and visitors from the dangers of wildfire and manages forest resources to ensure they are available for future generations.
The Florida Forest Service State Office, headquartered in Tallahassee, manages district offices that are located statewide. The agency is comprised of four bureaus: Forest Protection, Forest Management, Forest Logistics and Support, and Field Operations.
The Forest Protection Bureau oversees the agency’s aviation, communications, federal equipment (FEPP), fire prevention and mitigation, meteorology, prescribed fire, safety, standards, and training programs. The Forest Management Bureau oversees the agency’s forest management programs on both public and private lands. Public lands include 38 state forests and 1 ranch that cover over 1.1 million acres. Private lands encompass 65% of Florida’s 17.2 million acres of forest land. The Forest Logistics and Support Bureau oversees the agency’s facilities and construction, equipment/fleet, and informational technology sections, providing the critical infrastructure and services that are required to accomplish the Florida Forest Service mission.

The Field Operations Bureau is the largest bureau in the agency, overseeing 15 districts and more than 1,000 employees across the state. This bureau is considered the “boots on the ground” and works to execute the plans and guidance developed by the other bureaus to achieve the Florida Forest Service’s mission, vision and strategic goals.
