Any person who provides classroom and range instruction to applicants for Class “G” licensure must have a Class “K” license.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a license, you must be at least 18 years old.

Citizenship Requirements

You must be either a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident alien to qualify for a Class "K" license, and you must provide documentation confirming your citizenship status.

• If you were born in the United States, submit a copy of your birth certificate, U.S. passport, Social Security card, driver license, state-issued ID card, or voter registration card.
• If you are a naturalized citizen, submit a copy of your U.S. passport or the official document issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services indicating that you are a naturalized citizen.
• If you are not a U.S. citizen, submit a copy of your Permanent Legal Resident Alien card.

Training/Experience

To qualify for a Class "K" license, you must submit a copy of one of the following with your application:

• The Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Instructor Certificate and written confirmation by the commission that you possess an active firearms certification,
• The National Rifle Association Private Security Firearm Instructor Certificate (see NRA Firearms Courses),
• A firearms instructor certificate issued by a federal law enforcement agency, or
• A valid DD Form 214 indicating honorable discharge and service of no less than three years in the military as a firearms instructor not more than three years before submission of this application, as provided in Section 493.6105(6)(a)4, Florida Statutes (F.S.).

To continue to qualify for a Class “K” license, you must submit a copy of one of the following with your renewal application:

• One of the certificates specified under Section 493.6105(6), F.S., as proof that he or she remains certified to provide firearms instruction, or
• Proof of having taught at least six 28-hour firearms instruction courses to Class “G” applicants during the previous three-year license period. 

Examination

You must successfully complete the Firearms Instructor's Examination. The Division of Licensing must approve your application before you will be able to take the examination. On approval, the division will pre-register you with Everblue, a third-party testing company we have contracted with to provide examination services, and you will receive an email from noreply@fdacs.onlinetestportal.com. You will then be able to schedule your exam either remotely online or at one of Everblue's facilities across the state. Remote online exams can be taken anytime 24/7/365 and do not require an appointment but do require a computer with a webcam. A $70 exam fee is required and paid directly to Everblue. Note to Military Veterans

The initial application and license fees for a veteran shall be waived if the application is received within 24 months of the applicant being discharged from any branch of the United States Armed Forces. Please include a copy of your DD 214.
