The Florida Metrology Laboratory maintains the standards for mass and volume in order to provide reliable calibration services for the measurement community. The Florida Metrology Laboratory is traceable through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) under laboratory code 200560-0. The laboratory is recognized by NVLAP for compliance with criteria set forth in NIST Handbook 150:2020 and all requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Calibration Services
The Florida Metrology Laboratory strives to provide the best possible calibration service to its customers. To schedule an appointment, call (850) 921-1580. Please note that the lab schedules on average two to four months in advance; items submitted without appointments may have delays in service or be subject to rejection.
Appointments are required for all calibration services. The Metrology Calibration Request [ Adobe PDF Document ] form must accompany all scheduled calibration work.
Calibration Requirements
Item cleanliness is paramount for all calibration services provided by the laboratory. All items submitted should arrive clean and ready for calibration. Any item submitted that does not meet calibration requirements may be subject to rejection and returned to the customer at their expense. See our list of requirements:
Mass
- Stainless steel weights should be free of any grime or rust.
- Foam padding in weight kits can erode over time and contribute to debris buildup on weights. Monitor and replace or remove foam padding when necessary to prevent grime.
- Cast-iron weights should be free of any grime, rust, loose paint or adhering debris.
- All registered service agency’s cast-iron weights should meet NIST Handbook 105-1 [ Adobe PDF Document ] requirements.
Volume
- Five-gallon test measures and J-type provers should be well cleaned with a mild detergent. Make sure all soap residue is thoroughly rinsed away and that the sight glass tube is clean and the scale plate is readable.
- Mild steel test measures and large-volume provers should be properly coated with paint (see NIST Handbook 105-3 [ Adobe PDF Document ]).
- Large-volume provers should be well cleaned inside and out with detergent and water and all discharge drain hoses and/or pipes must be purged or clean. Note that the Florida Metrology Laboratory is not equipped to handle petroleum runoff and customers will be charged an extra fee for cleanup if necessary.
- LP-gas provers must be depressurized and thoroughly flushed with water prior to submission for calibration. All drain hoses and pipes must be purged or clean as well.
- All test measures and provers should be checked for leaks prior to submission for calibration.
- All test measures and provers are required to have a manufacturer ID plate that includes the cubical coefficient of expansion.
- LP-gas provers must arrive at the laboratory with both the check valve and the bottom drain valve plug removed but in hand for calibration.
Weight Carts
- Weight carts must be well cleaned and properly coated with paint where necessary. Refer to NIST Handbook 105-8 [ Adobe PDF Document ] and checklist.
- All fluids, tires, batteries, etc., must be checked prior to submission for calibration.
