On May 6, 1958, provisions of the Federal Imported Fire Ant Quarantine were enacted to slow or prevent the non-natural spread of imported fire ant (IFA), Solenopsis invicta. Today, there are 14 states, including the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, all or partially included in the Federal Imported Fire Ant Quarantine.
Imported fire ants can easily be transported long distances in soil, nursery stock and other commodities shipped from an infested area, and can pose serious threats to people, small animals, crops and agricultural equipment. For Florida growers and nurserymen to meet the requirements of the IFA Federal Quarantine, nurseries must sign a compliance agreement for IFA and follow all guidelines established with the compliance. This includes inspection and treatment of regulated articles. All regulatory activities of the IFA Quarantine in Florida are under the authority of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Division of Plant Industry.
The Florida Imported Fire Ant Compliance List gives regulatory officials from other states and countries the ability to monitor nurseries in Florida to ensure they are under compliance and that their IFA “stamp” is current. In addition, this list provides Florida stock dealers and plant brokers with a reference to guarantee they are purchasing from nurseries that are compliant. The IFA compliant nursery list is updated quarterly.
