Florida Seafood Landings and Economic Impact

In 2024, Florida fishermen landed 96.5 million pounds of fish worth $240.5 million (wholesale value), a 16.3% decrease over 2023 and a 3.4% decrease over the past decade, representing 5.6% of U.S. total value.

•  Florida ranked fifth in 2024 dockside value. Alaska ranked first with $1.37 billion.
•  Florida ranked sixth in 2024 price per pound at $2.98 per pound.

The $240.5 million in Florida total dockside value:

• Supported 2,981 jobs,
• Generated more than $8.87 million in business tax revenues, and 
• Generated more than $365.2 million in total economic impact.

Florida’s East Coast has increased in value over the past decade while the West Coast has decreased in value over the past decade.

• Florida’s East Coast is driven by growth in production (pounds).
• Florida’s West Coast is driven by growth in value (price per pound).

Florida’s West Coast (Gulf Fishery)

Florida’s West Coast has decreased production (landing pounds) by 33.7% over the past decade, while the price per pound increased by 28% from 2015 to 2024, indicating an overall 15.2% decrease in Florida’s West Coast value.

The top 10 most valuable species landed on Florida’s West Coast during 2024 were stone crab ($41.2 million), spiny lobster ($30.6 million), red grouper ($16.0 million), red snapper ($14.4 million), blue crab ($10.7 million), bait shrimp ($8.6 million), pink shrimp ($7.3 million), yellowtail snapper ($5.7 million), king mackerel ($3.8 million) and vermilion snapper ($3.2 million).

Florida’s East Coast (Atlantic Fishery)

Florida’s East Coast has increased production (landing pounds) by 85.6% over the past decade, while the price per pound decreased by 24.3% from 2015 to 2024, indicating an overall 40.51% increase in Florida’s East Coast value. 

The top 10 most valuable species landed on Florida’s East Coast during 2024 were rock shrimp ($9.7 million), white shrimp ($6.5 million), king mackerel ($5.9 million), blue crab ($5.4 million), spiny lobster ($3.4 million), Spanish mackerel ($2.5 million), swordfish ($2.2 million), golden tilefish ($1.6 million), stone crab ($1.1 million) and vermilion snapper ($1.0 million).

Florida’s Seafood Exports

Florida seafood products exports for 2024 were $394 million and have increased by 11% in 2024 over 2023. This value can be inflated due to transshipment.

The $394 million in Florida seafood products exports is much higher than the $240.5 million in Florida seafood landings due to transshipments from other locations and due to U.S. landings representing wholesale value and not retail or exported market value.

Canada is Florida’s leading seafood products export partner with $156.2 million, representing 39.6% of all seafood products exported from Florida.
