The council provides recommendations to the Commissioner of Agriculture and the legislature about public health pest control in Florida.

This council develops and recommends to the department a request for proposal process for arthropod control research. It identifies potential funding sources for research or implementation projects, evaluates and prioritizes proposals upon request by the funding source, and prepares and presents reports, as needed, on arthropod control activities in the state to other governmental organizations, as appropriate. 

The council operates under the authority of Section 388.46, Florida Statutes.

Membership Requirements

The Florida Coordinating Council on Mosquito Control is comprised of the following representatives or their authorized designees:

• The Secretary of Environmental Protection
• The State Surgeon General
• The Executive Director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
• The State Epidemiologist
• The Commissioner of Agriculture
• The Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund
• Representatives from:
  • The University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Florida Medical Entomological Research Laboratory
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology
  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
• Four mosquito control directors nominated by the Florida Mosquito Control Association
• Two representatives of Florida environmental groups
• Two private citizens who are property owners whose lands are regularly subject to mosquito control operations
